A Comparison of Bacterial and Eukaryotic Genomes
So, the typical eukaryotic genome is certainly a strange affair. The hybrid ancestry of eukaryotes is very clear to see, with bacterial genes from captured metabolic slaves scattered throughout a genome that is otherwise more similar to archaea. Sprawling between and within these genes is a mass of repetitive junk, some derived from viruses, leading to enormous genomes that are coiled and packed so firmly that several metres of DNA can be squeezed into each tiny nucleus. In some multicellular beings, junk DNA seems to have got totally out of control, with less than 5% of the genome actually coding for proteins. It seems an odd start for creatures that we consider to be the ultimate life forms on our planet.
